The
superb beaches at Grands Sables and Sables
Rouges, coloured by the dark red garnet that is
abundant on the island, the Pointe des Chats
and its lighthouse, the Pointe des Saisies
and the Crugel site in Locmaria where a
Viking ship tomb unique in France was discovered. The
Vallon de Saint Gildas with its wash house
and its fountain springs where once an oratory stood.
The delightful Port Lay and Port Mélin,
the Pointe de Pen Men , the pointe
de kervédan and its ancient Venete (the local
inhabitants in Roman times) camp with its clearly visible
entrenchments, Saint Nicolas creek and the
Trou de l'Enfer, where the groaning of the
sea has encouraged many a legend.
Don't miss the magnificent Nature Reserve,
for its originality (about 60 different minerals, including
amphibolite, epidote and garnet) and its ornithological
interest (nesting sea birds abound, crested cormorants,
petrels, fulmars, brown gulls and herring gulls).

The chapel of Notre Dame du Calme
in the hamlet of Méné, the town of
Groix and its church of Saint Tudy
with its tuna fish windvane. The Fort Surville
at the Pointe de la Croix, the hamlet of Locmaria
with its twisty streets ablaze with flowers in the
summer and its chapel of Notre Dame de Placemanec
with its marine ex-votos. The hamlet of Quelhuit,
the megalithic monuments… menhir de Kermario.
Finally a visit to the island's eco-museum is a
must, a living memory richly illustrated of the
natural, historic and maritime heritage. The collections
give an insight into life on this island that was
once the biggest tuna fishing port in France.
